A Hairdresser’s Guide to Properly Shampooing Your Hair
Let this be your guide!
As hairdressers, we’ve had the pleasure of working with countless clients over the years, and one common question that often comes up is…
“How do I properly shampoo my hair?”.
Well, you’ve come to the right place!! It might seem like a straightforward task, but there’s more to it than meets the eye. Properly shampooing your hair is the foundation of a healthy mane. In this blog post, we’re going to walk you through the steps to make sure your hair gets the care it deserves!
Step 1: Choose the Right Shampoo
The first step to a successful hair wash is selecting the right shampoo. Not all shampoos are created equal, and it’s important to choose one that suits your hair type. If you have oily hair, opt for a clarifying shampoo. If you have dry or damaged hair, a moisturizing or repairing shampoo would be more your style.
Step 2 - Wet Your Hair Thoroughly
Before applying shampoo, your hair should be thoroughly wet. Use lukewarm water, as hot water can strip your hair of its natural oils. Wet your hair from root to tip, making sure every strand is saturated.
Step 3 - Use the Right Amount of Shampoo
A common mistake is using to much shampoo. A little goes a long way, so you only need a small amount, usually about the size of a quarter or less - depending on your hair length. Too much shampoo can leave a residue, making your hair look greasy or heavy.
Step 4 - Lather and Massage
Gently massage the shampoo into your scalp using your fingertips, not your nails, to avoid scratching your scalp! Start at the roots and work your way to the tips, The massaging action helps to remove built up dirt and oil. Don’t forget the back of your head and the nape of your neck, as these areas often get overlooked.
Step 5 - Rinse Thoroughly
After massaging in the shampoo, its time to rinse! Rinse until water runs clear, indicating that all the shampoo has been removed. Make sure to rinse the roots to the tips to ensure no residue is left behind.
Step 6 - Condition Wisely
Conditioner should be applied to the lengths and ends of your hair, not the scalp. Apply the conditioner, leave it on for a few minutes and then rinse out. Using conditioner correctly helps with detangling, adds moisture, and leaves your hair soft and manageable.
Step 7: Finish with a Cold Rinse
A cold rinse at the end of your shower helps to close the hair cuticles, making your hair smoother and shinier. It also helps to lock in the moisture from the conditioner.
Step 8: Towel Dry Gently
When you step out of the shower, avoid rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel, as this can cause damage and frizz. Instead, gently pat your hair with a soft towel or microfiber cloth to remove excess water.
We swear properly shampooing your hair is a fundamental part of maintaining healthy and beautiful locks. By following these steps, you can ensure your hair is clean, well-nourished and ready for any hairstyle you desire.
Remember, a little care goes a long way when it comes to your hair, and these simple steps can make a world of a difference in your daily hair care routine. So, treat your hair with love and respect, and it will reward you with gorgeous, radiant hair!!
